Sejiro Avoseh

Biography

SEJIRO AVOSEH WAS BORN IN LAGOS, NIGERIA, IN 1990. HE STILL LIVES AND WORKS IN LAGOS.

The collage technique enables Sejiro Avoseh to anchor his art - on the verge of abstraction - in the real. The cut-outs from magazines and other elements he combines to his painting create hybrid and fantastical forms, between abstract bodies and mechanical bodies. The way he builds his work reflects his own experience of life. He deals with the changes and mutations of society. He describes: "I am painting the lives that have entered mine, I am also painting the effects these lives have had on mine; how they have lifted me." His body of work is connected to the Nigerian society and translates his will to change the established order to build a new world.

His series of portraits "Hungry and Angry" refers directly to the current political situation in Nigeria. If Sejiro Avoseh imagined this series before the demonstrations of October and the subsequent inhumane retaliations, it illustrates this feeling of injustice and helplessness which has fuelled the current events. It embodies a revolution against abyssal inequalities and a struggle for more freedom and social improvements. Thus, it is part of a global contestation of the regime.

Sejiro Avoseh completed a Diploma In Painting at Lagos State Polytechnic, Lagos, Nigeria in 2013. Since then, he collaborated with international doll- maker Aidamaris Roman on her "Forgotten Heart" series. In 2018, he was listed as one of "18 Nigerian young visual artists under 30 to follow" by art critic and author Jess Castellote. His work has also been featured in several art fairs including FNB Art Joburg (2019) and Art Dubai (2020).
